Hydraulic Solutions: The Bean Counter versus the Go-To-Guy

When one cares about things, one becomes engaged with it; one will find certain costs associated with it – providing sleepless nights and grayness, especially when providing hydraulic solutions! However, if you think you have had your fair share of headaches when it comes to hydraulic repairs put them to rest and read on!

As a leading hydraulic solution company A-Tech Hydraulics deals with many different corporations and one of these is the Coal Mine business and when it comes to hydraulic oil treatment keeping it clean and filtered, taking oil samples, and servicing this is where we come in.

However, with time issues seem to crop up and thus using the wrong hydraulic oil and with weather conditions at time temperatures range up to +30°, or can even go below -40°. In many situations, we use VG68 hydraulic oil during warmer periods and switch to VG32 for the colder months.

These storage tanks have a capacity of up to 55,000l and this one-month we ordered the VG32 oil for the winter months ahead 15,000l of this oil was added to the main tank. As the technician had recently started working here it took some time for him to figure out why the analysis report was so far out to make a long story short the specs was sent on to the oil supplier.

It left us with trying to figure out where this oil was going. This oil is expensive and one does not want to waste it! As they had recently had maintenance done, we assumed that the least of our concerns were hydraulic leaks.

Finally, we took a helicopter ride to view the situation from the air and with such a large organization there is loads of money involved in keeping the hydraulic systems up and running and someone has to step up and take responsibility!

The main problems are that the bean counter had not told us how many millions they spend on the mine in replacing hydraulic components throughout the year and what % they spend is needed as savings in order to recover the additional ½ million bucks for multi-viscosity, hydraulic oil, and more.
